Fracture 2007

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0488120/

A well-acted movie, but not a well written one, in my opinion.  While the story is engaging, the ending really leaves something to be desired.  The antagonist just isn't despicable enough for you to want to see him go down so hard, and the protagonist isn't likeable enough for you to care whether or not he gets the justice he wants, in the end.

I didn't feel like it was terrible, but it wasn't spectacular.  Would I recommend it?  Eh.  Only if you have a huge Ryan Gosling or Anthony Hopkins boner.  Otherwise, it's not as impressive as a movie starring those two should be.

Ratattouille 2007

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382932/

There was a reason I skipped this when it came out.  There was a period during which Disney/ Pixar produced a certain kind of formulaic claptrap that anyone with half a brain cell could have caught onto.  For a good little while there, all of their movies were essentially "someone who isn't like most of the people around them has to try to make everyone understand them" and all of the problems stem from simple misunderstandings.  And there's always at least one person whose lack of ideological optimism is vilified.  I know these are supposed to be family movies, accessible to children, but the nuanced subject matter of the cooking world really wouldn't be on par with the understanding of children.  Hell, just some of the dialogue would have been far too complicated for children to catch; I found myself scowling and listening VERY intently to the ranting of Colleen as she explains the difficulties of getting into haute cuisine as a woman.  During which, by the by, she is stabbing knives into his shirt sleeve.  This would have made a better adult film, particularly if the metaphors could have been a little deeper, and the messages less on the sleeve.  It wasn't bad, though.

Would I recommend this?  Only for older children, but not for younger.  There's too much waving of knives, which might be a bad thing to show impressionable little ones.  For adults, there are better films, animated and otherwise.

Heat 1995

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113277/

Hello internet land!  I've decided that my new hobby is movies, tv, film.  I've spent a great deal of my life enjoying these things anyway, so why not produce something, some kind of thoughts on what I've been doing?

So Heat was a pretty good movie.  The top review on imdb is spot-on, and I couldn't really agree more.  The only thing I found a little weak in the movie, was the relationship between Vincent and Justine (the cop and his wife).  A few things are touched upon, but it seems implausible that someone would marry a person at as late a date as the 90's, without knowing what his career entailed.  Even for older characters at that time, people over the last few generations have not been known for throwing themselves into marriages of lust and whim, and certainly not SECOND marriages of lust and whim.  I know there are exceptions, but for the savvy displayed by the two characters, this wouldn't make sense.

All other things considered, it's a great movie.  I didn't watch it all in one sitting- I stopped around the mid point to make dinner- so I don't know if the three hour time span really tries the patience when one sits to watch it all at once.  Still, I never felt bored, and don't think it would be a problem.

Would I recommend this?  Yes.
